Hair loss is a symptom of Pitta excess, so the first and most important step in healing hair loss is to balance Pitta. Follow a Pitta-balancing diet and engage in activities that alleviate Pitta excess.

Stress creates a Pitta imbalance and is a major contributor to hair loss. Consequently, it is important to engage in stress-relieving activities, especially meditation and yoga. Sleep also is critical to maintaining low stress levels. Be sure to sleep at least 7-8 hours per night to allow the body to recover from the day’s activities.

Dehydration can worsen stress on the body and contribute to hair loss, so be sure to consume adequate amounts of water throughout the day. It is also best to avoid alcoholic beverages, which can worsen dehydration and aggravate the hair.

In addition to these important balancing activities, a variety of supplements and topical treatments can be helpful in halting hair loss and promoting growth. Here, I discuss 8 Ayurvedic treatments for hair loss. All are safe and natural and can help you regain your healthy, thick, beautiful hair.

Sage promotes the growth of hair and is good for the brain and nervous system. It is excellent as a stress reliever and has a special power to promote calmness and clear emotional obstructions.

As an Ayurvedic treatment for hair loss, sage can be prepared as an infusion or applied topically. Combine sage powder with warm or cool water, or apply a paste made of sage powder and water to the scalp.

Said to be one of the most important rejuvenative herbs in Ayurvedic medicine, gotu kola is the main revitalizing herb for the nerves and the brain cells. It is a powerful blood purifier and is specific for chronic skin diseases such as eczema and psoriasis.

When used as an Ayurvedic treatment for hair loss, gotu kola can be combined with milk as a decoction and taken as a nerve tonic. The powder can be made into a paste by combining with water and can be applied topically to the scalp.

Fo-ti is a Chinese rejuvenative and a famous restorative for the hair. It is often combined with gotu kola to counter the effects of aging. Fo-ti can be taken daily as an infusion. Simmer one-half ounce in a pint of water for thirty minutes and drink warm or cool. Fo-Ti can also be taken in capsule form in equal parts with gotu kola.

4. Bhringaraj

Bhringaraj

Bhringaraj is called “ruler of the hair” due to its ability to promote head hair growth. It is preventative to the aging process, helping to rejuvenate bones, teeth, hair, hearing, sight, and memory. Bhringaraj is one of the best Ayurvedic herbal medicines for hair. It is unique in that it can be used to treat alopecia, a specific type of hair loss related to autoimmune disease.

Bhringaraj can be taken in internally or topically. Powder dissolved in water is an excellent option for supplementation, and bhringaraj oil can be used to remove grayness and reverse balding. Similar in many ways to gotu kola, which is another excellent rejuvenative tonic.

5. Aloe Vera

aloe vera

Aloe is a balancing tonic for the liver, spleen, blood, and female reproductive system. It is very cooling for Pitta and can aid in digestion. The balancing effect of aloe vera makes it a great remedy for hair loss, as it helps to stop hair fall and promote the growth of new hair.

Aloe can be used internally or externally to treat hair loss. As a tonic, two teaspoons may be taken three times per day, with a pinch of cumin added. Mixing the aloe in a glass of water or juice may be more pleasant. To use topically, massage aloe gel on the scalp.

6. Neem

One of the most powerful blood purifiers and detoxifiers in Ayurveda, neem clears toxins associated with most inflammatory skin diseases. Neem clears away foreign and excess tissue and can be used as a medicated oil as a healing and disinfectant agent for skin diseases.

Neem is an incredible Ayurvedic treatment for hair loss. It works to calm inflammation and ease stress, both of which contribute to hair loss. Its detoxification properties are wonderful in helping to support the liver.

Neem can be taken in powder form or topically as a medicated oil. Neem can be taken in capsule form or the powder can be dissolved in hot or cold water. Topically, neem oil can be massaged into the scalp, with particular attention given to areas of more severe hair loss.

7. Essential Oil Infusions

Several essential oils can be used to stimulate hair growth and prevent hair loss. Essential oil infusions are a valuable component of traditional Ayurvedic treatment for hair loss.

Birch, chamomile, and coriander infusion – To 1 ounce of coconut oil, add 5 drops of birch, 5 drops of chamomile, and 5 drops of coriander. Massage into scalp.

Brahmi – Brahmi is the medicated oil of the gotu kola leaf and is known as the rejuvenator for all systems. It is particularly good for promoting hair growth and preventing baldness. Add 5 drops of brahmi to 1 ounce of coconut oil and massage into scalp.

8. Healthy Hair Supplement

I saved my favorite remedy for last. This supplement from Banyan Botanicals is perfectly formulated to support healthy hair growth. Healthy Hair contains herbs that detoxify the body and cleanse the liver. The supplement is designed to calm excess Pitta, which is known in Ayurveda to promote premature graying and hair loss. The main ingredient is bhringaraj, which acts as a rejuvenative for the hair and scalp. Amalaki fruit, brahmi leaf, and hibiscus flower are rejuvenatives that complement bhringaraj and support hair growth.
